Taekwon-Do in Media with Mr Pygott

Taekwon-Do in Media with Mr Pygott

In Year 9 Media Studies, our students have been studying and analysing the original 1984 Karate Kid film starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita, compared to the 2010 remake of the same name, starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan.

Here at Rosmini College we have our very own Black Belt Taekwon-Do instructor, Mr Pygott. Mr Pygott very graciously gave up his time to come speak to the boys about key elements of Taekwon-Do, as well as show them some defensive strategies. Mr Pygott reinforced the importance of staying away from potentially volatile situations and that martial arts such as Taekwon-Do should only be used when absolutely necessary, when there is no other alternative. This message mirrored the themes of both films, as shown through the martial arts teachers, Mr Miyagi (Pat Morita) and Mr Han (Jackie Chan). Mr Pygott spoke about the different levels of awareness in various situations and the need to be alert and conscious of our surroundings. He also taught the boys about the fascinating history and origins of Taekon-Do, which is a relatively new form of martial arts.

The boys were very excited to learn some basic defence strategies, simple manoeuvres that are very effective and can de-escalate a situation very quickly. Once Mr Pygott had demonstrated, the boys were then able to practise these together. Mr Pygott was even willing to demonstrate some more sophisticated techniques that he has learnt over the years. A very big thank you to Mr Pygott for creating such an awesome and engaging opportunity for our boys.
