Students enjoy creating stories with NZ author David Riley

This year, the 9ENF English class had the privilege of working with award-winning author and educator David Riley. Known for his engaging storytelling and relatable nature, David connected easily with the boys, inspiring them with his down-to-earth approach and passion for writing.

Visiting the class 2–3 times per week, David guided the students through crafting their stories, which began with a memory and included a twist. Along the way, he taught the boys that writing is more than an academic exercise; as Rory Humphreys reflected, “Writing is life,” with the power to uplift or harm.

Lessons often began with motivational videos featuring Rosmini old boys sharing how they used writing in their lives. Teacher aides Kathy Wilson and Mala Reddy supported the boys in developing their ideas, emphasising the importance of oral language as a foundation for creativity. The English department teachers helped the boys edit and proofread their stories as our deadline neared.

The boys illustrated their story by creating artwork using the Kreat AI digital platform, basing their visuals on detailed character descriptions they had written. This reinforced the power of language in shaping imagination.

The project concluded with a celebratory breakfast for the launch of their book, Harbour Heroes. David Riley, parents, whānau, and staff joined to honour the boys’ achievements as they received their published books—a testament to their creativity and hard work.
