Wētā Workshop Unleashed trip
Earlier this term our Year 9 Media Studies students visited Wētā Unleashed in the heart of the city. The trip was an eye-opening opportunity to delve into the creative minds of people working in the New Zealand film industry.
The displays included mood and planning boards that showed the range of iterations characters, settings and ideas go through to create a final product. There were interactive displays where ākonga could control machines with sensors that tracked their eye movements, and they could scream into a monster and add a range of effects to change their scream.
A few boys sat at the make up table and got digitally made over into a horror character.
The fantasy set opened into a staged room with castles, clifftops, a tunnel and a throne. Our boys enjoyed having a go with the medieval weaponry.
Finally, the boys got to experience the sci-fi film display that showed how cameras work to enhance the size and effect of a character on screen.
The Wētā trip is a great opportunity for our ākonga to experience the film industry as one aspect of a huge range of media jobs. We hope it’s inspired some of them to let their creativity unleash.
