Shrove Tuesday 2025

Shrove Tuesday 2025

On Tuesday 4 March Rosmini staff and students recognised Shrove Tuesday at school, a day traditionally celebrated by cooking pancakes. Thank you to our Catholic Character leaders and staff who donned their aprons before school and served fresh coffee and delicious pancakes with toppings.

The history of this tradition is that Anglo-Saxon Christians would enjoy their final indulgence, and at the same time clear their pantries before Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent and 40 days of fasting before Easter. The word "shrove" comes from "shrive", and followers would go to confession and they were “shriven” (absolved from their sins.)

The pancake race was a highlight of the morning, with Y13 Max William being crowned the winner! The legacy of the pancake race said to date from around 1445, with legend being that a local woman heard the shriving bell while she was making pancakes and ran to church in her apron, still clutching her frying pan.
