Senior Science BBQ 2025
On Tuesday 25 March Rosmini College’s Science Department hosted 15 Old Boys to speak with 150 senior science students about their experience in the field, covering topics from aviation to engineering and university life.
Notable speakers included Bryan Stade, Simon Barter and Benedict Chan. Bryan is a Senior Structures Engineer at Airbus New Zealand, and he spoke to the boys about principals of flight and aviation systems. Simon is completing a PHD at the University of Auckland in photonics, and he spoke about his research, specialising in raman scattering in medical research. Benedict is currently in his third year of medical school, and he shared his knowledge of what it takes to be a medical student, as well as life at university.
Several alumni from 2024 discussed the transition from high school to university, and older guests who are more established in an engineering program talked about study and exam techniques, networking, job prospects and work experience modules (requiring 800 hours!). It was interesting to hear that in the first year of study 70% of a student's mark comes from exams, so it is a requirement that they are competent in sitting exams.
After a visit from the fire brigade, the students enjoyed a BBQ with pork and salads. Thanks to John Smith for organising this fantastic event, the boys for pitching in to serve and clean up, and to supportive parents for all your help.
