Remembering Dr John Mayhew

Remembering Dr John Mayhew

The Rosmini College community was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. John Mayhew on 9 April.

John was a Rosmini Old Boy from 1966 to 1972. He was a top scholar while at the school and in the 1st XV for his last two years. His three brothers also attended the college.

John became a doctor of medicine and then famously became the All Black doctor from 1988 to 2005. He was also the doctor for the Warriors rugby league team for many years as well as being team doctor for the North Harbour rugby team.

John was on the Board of Rosmini College from 1998 to 2015 where he gave sterling service to the college and where his wisdom proved an invaluable asset.

John continued to be involved with the college after he stepped down from the Board in 2015. He offered me valuable and insightful advice from time to time and caringly checked in on me in my first few years. Another example of John’s continued service to the college was his annual administration of flu jabs to the staff.

He had three sons, Richard, Matthew and Nick, who all attended the college. His eldest son Richard has been the coach of the 1st XV for the last two years.

John’s family remain in the thoughts and prayers of the college at this very sad and difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.
